Cal Newby, Former Director of Photography
Quad Graphics
Cal Newby (canewby@wi.rr.com)
Cal was part of the print industry for over 40 years. The last 26 years he was a team member at Quad Graphics. Although he had the opportunity to work in all phases of reproduction his focus dealt with the reproduction of images. He is given credit for starting departments, Quad Imaging, Quad Education and Quad Photo during his time at Quad. When he retired from Quad, Cal had spent his last 15 years as the Director of Photography for Quad Graphics. Within this role he was responsible for all of Quad Graphics Photo Studios across the country.
Among Cal’s accomplishments was the development of a process called “Measured Photography”. Cal along with Swiss Camera manufacture, Sinar, developed this process, which simply measured the complete reproduction process. This idea built a logical relationship from real life to the printed sheet.
In the early 1990’s he served as the “Chairmen of the Input Task Force Committee”, Graphics Communication Association (GCA). Cal’s education came primary through practical application. However he did attend classes at MATC and Marquette University. Although this education was invaluable most of his experience came in part from many seminars/workshops around the world. Cal was also given opportunity’s to share his knowledge with others in the industry. The GCA convention, Photo East, Photo West, The Lights of Australia were just a few of the venue’s that Cal was able to share his knowledge with others.
Prior to joining Quad Graphics Cal spent time in the newspaper industry, working at the Waukesha Freeman and the Tucson Daily Citizen. A commercial job shop in Oconomowoc Wisconsin was the last position Cal held before the Quad opportunity.
Cal’s passion, for improvement, truly guided his professional career and the results that were achieved.
